Why You Should Be Eating Tomatoes + Your June Desktop Calendar
This month’s calendar highlights the sweet summer tomato in all of its antioxidant-rich glory. It’s hard to believe that as little as 200 years ago the tomato was thought to be poisonous in the US! This is likely because it’s part of the nightshade family, which legitimately does contain some poisonous plants (such as belladonna).
Fortunately, we now know that fresh tomatoes (as well as tomato extracts) have been shown to help lower total cholesterol, LDL (the kind of cholesterol we generally think of as “bad”) and triglycerides (high levels of these fats are linked to higher incidence of stroke). They are also an excellent source of Vitamin C and have additionally been shown to support bone health.
